William Alvin Holloway, age 72, of Statesville died on Friday September 21, 2018. A graduate of Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC; Attended Campbell University, NC State, Old Dominion Univ., Univ. of Tennessee. Retired from the Navy after 21 years of active service as a Sr. Chief Journalist, Dept of Defense. While in the service, he graduated with honors from a Journalism program at Ft. Harrison, IN, toured 1 year in Vietnam, Coordinated the media for the Blue Angels, served in Adak, Alaska, where he ran the Armed Forces Radio and Television Services. While stationed in Diego Garcia, he distributed all types of programs to the ships at sea. While in Vancouver, Washington, he worked as a Journalist where he covered the Mt. Helen eruption. Served as the coordinator of the Portland, Oregon Rose Festival with other countries, reported when the Ronald Reagan Battleship was commissioned. Bill started his coaching career while in the Navy with men’s basketball and continued to coach for 40 years.
After retiring from the Navy, Bill lived in Lancaster, CA where he coached and worked as a producer of the radio show commercials for "The Rifleman" with Chuck Connors. He coached his son Brian’s Pee-Wee Flag Football team and continued to coach for years. In the year 2000, He became co-founder of PFL, Pioneer Football League. The first in the country. The PFL offered a chance for home-schooled and private schooled athletes to participate in football. It is still in existence today. The PFL has ministered to thousands of young men and has seen many of its athletes go on to play at the college level. They were called "The Lake Norman Storm". He was also a football coach at Statesville Christian School for the Jr. Varsity and Varsity. The Mooresville Christian Academy and Mooresville Recreation Center saw many years of his coaching. He also coached for 4 years for Lake Norman Hornets. He enjoyed many interests and hobbies. Played clarinet and trumpet in college. Enjoyed Classical and semi-classical music. Enjoyed many choirs especially the Libera Boys Choir, Civil War stories, Locomotive Train History and traveling. Preceded in death by his sister, Sandra Connelly. Survivors include his children, Barbara Jean Holloway Dale and husband David Dale, Brian David Holloway; 4 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild.
The family will receive friends 10 am on Thursday September 27th 2018 at Fieldstone Presbyterian Church in Mooresville followed by an 11 am service in the church chapel with Rev. Inger Manchester officiating. Interment is scheduled for 1 pm Thursday at Salisbury National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, he wished a Scholarship be set up for the Lake Norman Hornets which is a non-profit youth basketball organization.
